Retinoids can help reduce acne pigmentation

Researchers have found hyperpigmentation treatment with topical retinoids should be started as early as possible.

Post-inflammatory pigmentation happens when your skin produces extra melanin after it has been irritated from acne and is particularly common in people with skin of colour.

Often the pigmentation can be more distressing than the acne because of the dark spots left on the skin.

In a new study, researcher recommend “treatment with topical retinoids should be started as early as possible unless contraindicated”.

“For patients with sensitive skin, the newer lotions may be less irritating than older retinoid formulations,” they said.

“Combining retinoids with other topical agents and procedures such as superficial chemical peels can help to improve hyperpigmentation.”

They concluded acne problems are likely to improve weeks before pigmentation resolves and helping patients manage their expectations may reduce frustration.
