Skin yeast infections can co-exist with acne, study reveals

A 2022 peer-reviewed study published the Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology journal has revealed that a skin infection called Malassezia folliculitis (MF) can not only co-exist with acne but also imitate the skin condition.

The study noted that the prevalence of both conditions can change a patient’s treatment course and success, causing problems for dermatologists when trying to distinguish between the conditions. It also shows that the misdiagnosis has, and can, lead to subpar treatments for the patient due to misdiagnosis.

If patients have acne symptoms along with bumps and itchy skin on the scalp, hairline, and upper back, they are encouraged to speak to their dermatologist or GP for follow-up MF testing.

There are a few cost-effective and efficient MF testing methods available. The All About Acne team recommends that if you are dealing with acne, it’s always best to talk to your dermatologist or GP about the best treatment approach for you to avoid any misdiagnosis.
