Can essential oils treat acne?

Recent research has revealed the potential of essential oils in combating acne, shining new light on age old remedies.

As published in the medical journal Molecules, essential oils offer a dual approach: direct skin health benefits and easy-to-understand treatment strategies.

The research assesses that essential oils are helpful in treating acne and there is potential for future acne treatment formulations to include essential oils because they can absorb well into the skin. If combined with other active treatment compounds, essential oils can drive these into deeper skin layers.

When it comes to various essential oils, they all have different treatment qualities.

Just to name a few, here are some essential oils that have been proven to be effective in treating acne:

  • Oregano: neutralises microorganisms in the skin that cause acne.
  • Lavender: replicates the active quality of antiseptics and over-the-counter skin medications. It scavenges free radicals and decreases oxidative stress.
  • Myrtle: possesses the skin treatment trifactor of being antiproliferative, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory.
  • Lemon and other citrus essential oils (such as orange, grapefruit, and bergamot): destroy bacteria cell walls and work as an antibacterial.
  • Eucalyptus: possesses anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Thyme: antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiseptic.
  • Tea Tree: has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities. It is also antiviral and antifungal proving a promising treatment option for people with acne.
  • Rosemary: a further essential oil with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-microbial, as well as anti-carcinogenic properties.

Although we can gain a lot from this new scientific research, it’s important to note that your skin can get irritated with the over-use of essential oils, and can even cause allergic contact dermatitis.

This holistic approach could be a boon for those seeking gentle yet effective alternatives to harsh chemicals, but make sure you always consult your dermatologist!
