Home » Acne News » Dynamic duo: platelet rich plasma combined with micro-needling or laser therapy a potential new treatment combination
Acne scars may have found their match in Platelet Rich Plasma coupled with micro-needling or laser therapy.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical treatment aimed to repair degenerative tissue by using the patient’s own blood to stimulate natural healing processes.
A review in Blood Transfus 2023 journal analysed PRP in combination with micro-needling or laser therapy has emerged with positive results, proving more effective than micro-needling or laser therapy alone.
Patients reported improved outcomes when PRP was part of their treatment plan—reducing acne scarring healing time and post-treatment redness.
However, the review did note that research methods varied, and more testing is required to confirm the findings.
All About Acne Board member and practising Brisbane-based dermatologist, Dr Lisa Byrom, said that any new treatments that may assist with adolescent acne scarring were most welcome.
“If patients are noting positive results with their treatment, it is an encouraging sign,” she said.
She encourages patients to make it a priority to talk with their dermatologist about whether it is the right treatment approach for them.
“This is a very exciting field of research for those seeking to reduce their acne scarring, however; as there is limited research around platelet rich plasma and micro-needling as a combined treatment.”
“Whilst we do need more research and study trials, I am excited to see where this dynamic duo treatment takes us.”
Always talk to your dermatologist about how to tackle your acne scarring in the most efficient way that’s safe for your skin.
