Dermocosmetics and Acne

When it comes to managing acne, prescribed treatments often receive the most attention. However, research highlights the important role that skincare can play alongside medical management.

The term dermocosmetics refers to skincare products designed to support skin health and complement medical treatments. While these products do not treat acne in the same way as prescription medicines, choosing suitable skincare products may help support the skin barrier, improve comfort during treatment and reduce the likelihood of post-inflammatory marks remaining visible after breakouts have healed.

Building an Acne-Friendly Skincare Routine

A simple, consistent routine is often more effective than an overly complicated one. Research suggests that suitable skincare products may help support overall acne management when used appropriately.

We recommend:

  • Using a gentle cleanser
  • Using non-comedogenic moisturisers
  • Pick a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen and use it every day!

Some evidence suggests tinted sunscreen may offer additional protection against visible light exposure.

Avoid:

  • Harsh scrubs
  • Over-cleansing
  • Heavy hair oils or pomades that may block pores around the forehead
  • Choosing the right products can support mild acne management or prescribed treatment. However, skincare products are not a substitute for medical care.

If your acne is painful, causing scarring, persistent despite self-management, or affecting your wellbeing, it is important to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can assess your individual circumstances and recommend an appropriate management plan.
