Acne and rosacea in skin of colour

People with skin of colour need individual treatment plans when it comes to their acne and rosacea, according to researchers.

Acne and rosacea are common skin conditions among all ethnic groups, but particularly have different presentations, triggers and consequences in people with skin of colour.

Studies have shown that when people of colour develop rosacea, the early signs, including flushing, can be missed or mistaken for another condition.

“Although rosacea is reported less frequently in people with skin of colour, this may be the result of delayed diagnosis or late presentation due to the difficulty in discerning the classic features of (redness of the skin) in darker skin tones,” researchers say.

“In such cases, additional clues in the medical history and clinical examination may assist in making the diagnosis.”

The researchers say acne can also be further complicated by the development of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring in people with skin of colour, which can then influence treatment choice.
